From old kingdoms , to the present-day Benin ...

The history of Benin is very rich in events and you will find it across its museums, palaces and archeological sites.
At the origin, there were numerous small kingdoms but the most important one was the Dahomey one, then the Europeans arrived with the French colonization, after that, independence followed, punctuated by successive plots leading to a Marxist republic , and, at least, today learning the democratic way.
The saddest part of the country’s history was the time when millions of Benin people were treated as slaves and expatriated towards America to work in cotton and sugar cane fields. 

Here was born the Voodoo cult, which is still in practice nowadays.
 

There are many reasons to come and visit Benin: the coast, the beaches, the Animal park in the North and the traditional villages...
But what attracts travelers the most is the mysterious Voodoo cult with its pantheon of 250 divinities, its legends, lucky charms and ceremonies.
This cult was exported to Brazil Haiti and Cuba with slaves and is still very active today.
Among all these good reasons to visit Benin, there is another one, the people with their warm welcome and smile !

From April till October rainfalls are very heavy, so we recommend you to travel from November to March, during the dry season.
Nevertheless, it can be very hot especially in the North. On the seaside, the heat is more bearable.
